What is motor caravan insurance?

Whether you’re setting off on a year-long tour of Australia, or a weekend camper, Australian caravan insurance can cover your touring caravan or camper trailer against accidental damage, theft, vandalism, fire damage and more.

When you’re covered by a caravan insurance policy, you can opt for optional cover including hire-out cover and lay up cover and we can specifically tailor your insurance needs to protect your caravan at home or permanently on-site in a commercial operated caravan park.

How you can be protected with caravan insurance

The exact cover you can receive depends on the policy that you take out. But to give you an idea, here are some of the benefits a caravan policy may include:

Accidents
Cover your caravan in an accident, and help you pay for damage you cause to another person’s vehicle
Theft and vandalism
Cover your caravan if it’s stolen, vandalised, or damaged by someone trying to steal it
Fire, storm and flood
Cover your caravan if it’s damaged by severe weather events
Towing
Towing to a repairer or safe place after an insured event (like an accident)
Accomodation
If you can’t use your caravan due to an insurance event, cover for accommodation while your caravan is repaired or replaced
New replacement caravan
If your new caravan is written off, cover can provide a replacement of the same make and model
Contents cover
If contents are damaged or written-off, cover can provide payment to an agreed value
Flyover cover
If the large tarpaulin designed to flyover and cover an entire caravan, is damage or stolen

What types of caravan insurance are available?

You can typically purchase insurance to provide cover for your caravan or camper trailer while it is travelling on the road, when it is on-site at a caravan park, and/or when it is not being used for a certain period of time.

There are typically different levels of cover available under a caravan insurance policy, which are generally grouped into two areas:

  • Comprehensive – policies that cover damage or loss of the caravan and property inside it, as well as any damage to other people’s property
  • Third party – policies that only cover damage to other people or someone else’s property where the policyholder is at fault. You and your property are typically not covered if you are at fault.

Depending on how you use your caravan and the type of caravan you own will determine the cover you need.

Touring caravan insurance
Touring or tourer caravan insurance covers caravans towed by a vehicle. This type of insurance generally covers accidents, theft, contents, third party and public liability.

Camper trailer insurance
Camper trailers and folding caravans tend to be less secure and prone to weather damage. This type of insurance provides a similar cover as caravan insurance, but it doesn’t protect from weather damage and contents due to lack of security.

Motorhome insurance
Motorhomes are considered as different to caravans as they have engines. They are not covered by caravan insurance, and instead require motorhome insurance.

Do I need caravan insurance?

Few vehicles on our roads need insurance more than caravans or camper trailers for a range of reasons: they are large and vulnerable to damage, they are often driven into unfamiliar places and they usually spend a lot of their life outdoors in all sorts of weather.

If your caravan is damaged in an accident where you’re at fault, having caravan insurance helps to pay for repairs – or can replace it altogether if your caravan is written off.

If your caravan is stolen, caravan insurance can pay you the agreed or market value, so you can buy another caravan.

Case study

Jane and Max decided to take a month-long caravan trip from Newcastle to the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, and whilst driving into Noosa Heads National Park, an accident occurred. Fortunately, Jane and Max escaped without injury, however, the same could not be said for their 4WD, and caravan.

Jane and Max contacted their insurance broker who took some details and arranged for their car and caravan to be towed and assessed. Because their policy also contained accommodation, they helped arrange temporary accommodation in a nearby motel while their claim was assessed.

An assessor contacted them the next day, letting them know that their caravan could be repaired and that her insurance would cover the cost. They also helped arrange the repair of their 4WD which was covered under their motor vehicle insurance policy. While she was waiting for her car to be repaired, they also had access to a rental car – with the cost also covered by the motor vehicle insurance policy.

Finally, after the repairs were completed, they were able to complete their trip.

Tips or other things to know about caravan insurance

Each policy is different, but generally your caravan won’t be covered for:

  • Deterioration, depreciation, rust, corrosion, mould, or wear and tear of the caravan
  • Damage from vermin
  • Faulty design, or mechanical or structural failure in the caravan
  • Fusion of electric motors
  • Failure to secure your caravan, or leaving it in an unsafe position
  • Pre-existing damage from before you took out your policy
  • Water escaping from a shower recess or shower base
  • Scorching or melting where there was no flame (check details with your insurer).

There are other exclusions which our insurance brokers can outline for you. A deductible/excess may apply.

Do I need caravan insurance?

Australian caravan insurance is not a legal requirement, unlike compulsory third party (or CTP) insurance, which is mandatory. However, as with comprehensive car insurance, not having caravan insurance could leave you financially vulnerable if an accident were to occur, or if your caravan was stolen.

Can I tow a caravan on my car insurance?

Caravans can be covered under certain types of compulsory third-party (or CTP) insurance – but cover is limited.

For example, if your caravan were to be involved in an accident, some liability could be covered by your car’s compulsory third-party insurance (CTP), provided the caravan was in a roadworthy condition and was being towed by a registered car. In some states and territories, caravans have to carry a separate registration certificate, although they may not need separate CTP insurance.

However, CTP cover is limited and only covers liability for injuries or death caused to other people. For example, if you were to be in an accident and your caravan, while being towed, hit another car, causing injury to that driver or passenger, then your vehicle’s CTP insurance may cover the costs to compensate the injured third parties.

CTP insurance would not cover your property or the property of others.

How much is Australian caravan insurance?

The amount you pay each year for insurance is called a premium. Your premium is estimated by how likely it is that you’ll make a claim. The premium and excess you pay will depend on your policy and on other factors, such as your age.

Premiums generally range from $45-150 per month, depending on the cover. Our brokers can help you compare caravan insurance and find the best caravan insurance quote to suit your needs.

How do I choose the best caravan insurance?

When deciding which type of insurance will suit you, think about whether you can live without your caravan if it’s written off or stolen. Also consider if you can afford to pay for the damage to someone else’s car if you have an accident.

Before you take out caravan insurance, read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) of each policy thoroughly so you are aware of the terms and conditions involved, including the benefits and exclusions, and any additional excesses that may apply.

What does comprehensive caravan cover?

Comprehensive caravan insurance policies cover damage or loss of the caravan and property inside it, as well as any damage to other people’s property.

Does caravan insurance cover accidental damage?

Caravan insurance will cover loss, accidental damage, theft and natural disaster (such as storm, hail and flood), and will also cover liability for legal expenses and compensation, in the case of an accident where you were the driver at fault and someone else was injured or suffered damage to their property.
